At BreedCalc, we utilize the National Research Council (NRC) 2006 allometric equations to provide vet-reviewed, breed-specific calorie calculations.

The Science of Canine Energy Requirements

To accurately determine how much to feed your dog, veterinary nutritionists rely on two core metrics:

1. Resting Energy Requirement (RER)

The RER represents the baseline calories required to maintain basic physiological functions (e.g., breathing, circulation, cellular repair) in a thermoneutral environment. It is calculated using the NRC 2006 allometric scaling formula, which accounts for the fact that smaller dogs have a higher metabolic rate per kilogram of body weight than larger dogs:

For example, an adult dog weighing 10 kg has an RER of: \(70 \times (10^{0.75}) \approx 70 \times 5.623 \approx 394\) kcal per day.

2. Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER)

The RER is only the starting point. To find the total daily calories your dog needs, the RER must be multiplied by a Life Stage and Activity Factor. This yields the Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER).

  • Neutered/Spayed Adult (Indoor/Low Activity): RER Γ— 1.6
  • Intact Adult (High Activity/Outdoor): RER Γ— 1.8
  • Weight Loss Protocol: RER Γ— 1.0 (under veterinary supervision)

Why Breed-Specific Calculation Matters

A 10 kg French Bulldog and a 10 kg Border Collie have drastically different body compositions, metabolic rates, and health predispositions. The French Bulldog is prone to obesity and Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), requiring strict caloric restriction. The Border Collie, an active working breed, requires a significantly higher MER multiplier to sustain its energy expenditure.
